Animal Aid Society is a “no-kill” dog shelter. The society began in 1971 with a mission of finding homes for stray, abandoned, and abused dogs. Their dogs are not euthanized and live there until placed in a home.
The shelter does not receive any money from city, state or federal sources. In addition to medical care, they must maintain repairs on their shelter, pay utilities, and cover other fees associated with caring for the dogs. The average total monthly expense to care for one dog at their shelter is about $200. Their facility can house up to 40 dogs. They also provide information on specific breed rescue groups and maintain a book, “Someone’s Dog Needs A Home”, for owners looking to place their dog if they can no longer care for them.
The shelter is completely staffed by volunteers. Additional people are always needed to help with cleaning dog runs, feeding, general maintenance, newsletters, publicity, exercising, bathing, and socializing dogs.
The organization provides shelter, medical care, food, protection and acts as a placement agency for dogs in good health. It also offers education for the humane care and treatment of animals and attempts to prevent cruelty to all animals. Pet ownership is a lifelong commitment. New dogs can only be taken as current ones are adopted.
Their current location on Butler Farm Road was purchased in 1991. Each new dog is examined by a local vet, neutered, given current vaccinations and treated for existing medical needs. While living at the shelter each dog receives monthly heartworm and flea preventatives. All funds needed to care for these dogs come from donations and special fund raising events.
